Professor Igor S. Ivanov
Professor Igor S. Ivanov is a Russian diplomat, scholar, and statesman who has played a leading role in shaping international relations over the past three decades. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation from 1998 to 2004, where he guided Russia’s diplomacy during a period of profound geopolitical transformation.
Born in Moscow in 1945, Ivanov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), where he now serves as a professor of international relations. Over his distinguished career, he held senior diplomatic postings in Spain and Western Europe before rising to the post of Foreign Minister. In that role, he represented Russia in advancing arms control, conflict resolution, and Russia’s engagement with international institutions.
Following his ministerial service, Ivanov became Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, advising the government on strategic stability and global security issues. He has since combined academic teaching with leadership in international organizations, including service as President of the Russian International Affairs Council and as a member of the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation.
As a founder of The Hague Institute for Global Justice, Ivanov brought deep expertise in international diplomacy, conflict prevention, and multilateral negotiation. His perspective reinforced the Institute’s role as a forum where diverse nations and voices can find common ground in pursuit of peace and justice.
