Jozias van Aartsen
Jozias van Aartsen is a Dutch statesman and diplomat whose leadership has shaped both national and international public life. He served as Mayor of The Hague from 2008 to 2017, where he positioned the city as the world’s capital of peace and justice, strengthening its role as host to international courts, tribunals, and institutions dedicated to global governance.
Prior to his mayoralty, van Aartsen held senior positions in the Dutch government, including Minister of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries (1994–1998) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1998–2002). As Foreign Minister, he played a pivotal role in advancing European integration, transatlantic cooperation, and the Netherlands’ active engagement in international security and development. Earlier in his career, he served as Secretary-General of the Ministry of the Interior, demonstrating a lifetime of commitment to public service at the highest levels.
As a founder of The Hague Institute for Global Justice, van Aartsen brought unmatched political and diplomatic experience to its mission. His vision for The Hague as a center for international law and conflict resolution directly informed the Institute’s establishment and its role in promoting peace, accountability, and justice worldwide.
Van Aartsen has also been active in cultural and civic leadership, championing dialogue between governments, international organizations, and civil society. His career reflects a deep belief that cities and nations alike can serve as platforms for cooperation and bridges to a more just global order.
