This report is the final project output of “Governance of Climate Change Adaptation in Zanzibar”, which aimed to identify adaptation measures for Zanzibar and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that are experiencing the negative impact of climate change. Local climate action plans were developed in cooperation with local actors to reduce the vulnerability to climate change of three Zanzibar areas: Mjini Kiuyu, Mkokotoni, and Nungwi.

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the project’s activities over a period of two years that led to the formulation of the 23 recommended adaptation measures and a road map to their implementation. The report thus provides the Government of Zanzibar with concrete building blocks that support the implementation of the Zanzibar Climate Change Strategy.

The participatory planning process ensured a bottom-up approach that involved national as well as local stakeholders, in order to promote people-centered sustainable economic development which anticipates climate change and its impacts.

The project “Governance of Climate Adaptation in Small Island Developing States” builds on existing work by The Hague Institute on SIDS, in particular a policy brief outlining an action agenda regarding climate security and justice for SIDS, as well as a high-level roundtable event on the same topic. The executive summary of the Zanzibar report was made available in May 2017.

The Zanzibar pilot project was implemented from January 2015 until December 2016. In addition to the core funding provided by The Hague Institute, the project also received generous financial support from the Netherlands Water Partnership’s Young Expert Program on Water and from Deltares (project partner).
